Top Five Fuel Saving Tips for 2008.

Speaking with Chrysler/Mazda factory trained master technician Dado Langsang this week we
asked Mr. Langsang what he would recommend as the top five fuel saving tips for the year.
Considering the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gas in the Inland Empire is
approximately $3.78 with no end in sight to the steady price climb.

Mr. Langsang is the lead technician at One Stop Auto Care in Moreno Valley California. Here is
what he recommended.

1.) This is the one most people overlook, drive less, carpool when possible, combine trips when
shopping, and when you do drive…slow down, conservative driving saves a considerable amount
of fuel. Remember to leave a little early so you arrive to your destination on time.

2.) Have your vehicle's fuel system serviced. A fuel injection cleaning service is a professional
cleaning of all the vital areas in your vehicle's fuel system, over time the small passages and
orifices in your fuel injectors can become clogged or partially clogged causing sluggish
performance and degradation of fuel mileage. Many times because this happens over time you will
not notice the loss in performance. I do not recommend using over the counter fuel treatments,
they are more psychological than anything, take your vehicle to a certified technician for a
professional cleaning, I recommend Ever-Wear® Industrial Formula. Just in the resulting increase
in fuel economy, it will pay for itself, not to mention your surprise in the added performance
recovered.

3.) Changing your fuel and air filter on a regular basis, when was the last time you had yours
changed?  Check your vehicle manufactures recommendation, as a rule of thumb I recommend you
change both your air filter and fuel filter at least annually, sooner if you drive in dusty areas or
conditions and fill up your tank at many different gas stations.

4.) Check and correct the air pressure in your vehicles tires. If your tires are under inflated it
causes more rolling resistance which will rob your vehicles fuel mileage, not to mention premature
tire wear, and it is also dangerous. Most reputable repair shops will give you a free tire inspection
and will check the air pressure in your tires adjusting as needed. Have your wheel alignment
checked and corrected as needed, this is often overlooked as a cause of poor fuel mileage, and
keeping your vehicle aligned properly will extend the life of your tires as well.

5.) Buy 87 octane fuel unless your vehicle manufacturer expressly states that a higher grade is
required. There is an urban legend that is you mix high grade (92) with regular grade (87) you
will get better fuel mileage, unfortunately this is just a legend and there is no truth to it. Regular
(87) unleaded fuel is sufficient for the majority of vehicles on the road. Now that the price of fuel
is just pennies apart between the "bargain" brand gas stations and the major brand name stations,
it makes sense to only purchase brand name fuel for your vehicle.
